Viera’s Kaplan Throw No-Hitter Against Sebastian River

Jordan Kaplan picked a good time for a no-hitter.

The Viera Hawks pitcher tossed a no-no in a Friday meeting with 7A-6 rival Sebastian River, paving the way to a 5-0 shutout victory. A three-run third inning supplied all the offense needed in support of Kaplan’s gem.

Kaplan was fantastic on mound for the Hawks (8-2, 6-0), striking out twelve batters and walking just two in the near-perfect effort. He was in control all night, throwing nearly 70% of his pitches for strikes. Eight of his 12 strikeouts came in the final four innings. Kaplan even helped his own cause by going 1-for-3 and driving in two at the plate, including the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning to give the Hawks the 1-0 lead.

Chance Fogel and Steven Marini were the only two base runners for the Sharks (4-2, 1-2) on the night, as they were each issued walks but were not able to advance past first base. Chris Landis started the game and was issued the loss, allowing five runs, only one of which was an earned run.

The Hawks tallied nine hits in the game and the top of the line up was crucial to their success. The combination of Kyle Dentmon, Connor Leary, Andrew Brait and Thomas Berry went 7-for-15, scoring three runs and driving in two. Brait scored twice and Dentmon and Berry drove in a run apiece. Jordan Allen added the other run and Connor Scheer collected the other RBI in the district victory.
