New Smyrna Beach Outlasts Edgewater In 7A-5 Match Up
The Edgewater Fighting Eagles traveled to face the New Smyrna Beach Cudas Tuesday in a showdown of 7A-5 teams. The Eagles took a three-run lead into the fourth inning, but a six-run outburst for the Cudas swung momentum in their favor, and New Smyrna Beach held off Edgewater 6-4 to pick up its first district win of the season.
A lead-off double from Noah Orlando got things going for the Eagles (1-1, 0-1), who took the 1-0 lead when Tyrell Brewer drove Orlando home during the next at-bat. Orlando scored his second run of the game in the third on a double to left field from Ke J Wan Parker to give the Eagles a two-run lead.
Eagles’ starter Kyle Wolhfart was cruising through the first three innings. Wolhfart struck out seven batters over four innings, allowing just two base runners until the Cudas’ bats woke up.
RBI singles from Brett Buchanon and Joe Becker brought the Cudas (1-2, 1-0) to within one run. An error during the next at-bat loaded the bases for the Cudas and Robert Jordan made them pay with a three-RBI double to left on a 1-2 count. Joe Becker, Tyler Schwartz and Jolley crossed the plate to give the Cudas their first lead of the game at 5-3. Jordan was brought home during the next at-bat to give the Cudas a three-run lead.
Tyrell Brewer scored on an error to pull the Eagles to within two, but the combination of Cudas’ starter Seth Lovell and Logan Clayton ensured it wouldn’t get any closer. Lovell struck out nine batters over 6.2 innings, allowing two earned runs on seven hits. Clayton came in and got the final out of the game to secure the district win and pick up the save.
