Spruce Creek Celebrates Its 5 Seniors With Shutout Victory
Senior Night is one of those special occasions during the season, a chance to pay final tribute to the graduating players who are closing out their careers with their final varsity home games. On Friday night that celebration was focused on Spruce Creek’s 2024 senior class: Alex Cast, Shane Lavin, Andrew Ezell, Reed Johansson and Lucas Tutunjian.
But it was junior Garrett Grant who stole the show, as the right-hander delivered a complete-game shutout to earn a 2-0 victory over the Timber Creek Wolves. Grant allowed three hits and issued one walk over his seven scoreless innings, while striking out six.
The Hawks (13-4) channeled the energy from the pregame festivities into some immediate offense with their first at bats to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Devon Crown singled on a 2-1 pitch to start it off, advanced to second on a passed ball and to third when Andrew Ezell was retired on an infield ground out. Lamar Edwards then completed the job with a grounder to the right side for a 4-3 RBI ground out.
That slim lead proved to be the difference, although Spruce Creek added another insurance run in the fifth. Crown was hit by a pitch, stole second and then scored again on another RBI from Edwards. Edwards was 2-for-3 while driving in both runs.
Connor Mulready also had a complete-game to keep Timber Creek in the game. The senior right-hander allowed one earned run on five hits and two walks in six innings, with two strikeouts.
Spruce Creek did not shy away from scheduling a tough and quality opponent for Senior night in the Wolves (12-5), who had a small two-game win streak snapped in the loss. Creek has run a gauntlet through most of the top teams across Eastern Florida this season, with several more still to come to close out the year. The Hawks still have University School (7-6), Viera (9-7), Taravella (13-5), Oviedo (10-7) and Fleming Island (10-6) remaining on the schedule.
