Vero Beach Sweeps Its Way Through Nation’s Capitol
The Vero Beach Indians took advantage of the Spring Break holiday with trip of a lifetime in visiting Washington D.C. The chance for players and coaches to visit in person to places such as the White House and Capitol is priceless beyond baseball, especially for those who have never been before and who may never get another chance to come back.
On the baseball field, the Indians also represented well in going 3-0 in tournament play. The weather that plagued most of the East Coast and Florida this past week also did not spare D.C., but Vero Beach still managed to get in a trio of games. The Indians won two contests by mercy rule, the other via shutout, as they won 12-1 over Centreville, Virginia, and 16-3 over West Springfield, Virginia. Sandwiched between was a 3-0 shutout over George C. Marshall, Virginia.
Junior catcher Cole Morgan seemed to feast the most on the road cooking, as he went 5-for-8 with a double, 2 RBI and two walks in the three games. Junior shortstop Ashton Wetmiller also had a big week, as he was 5-for-8 with an RBI and four runs, and he also threw a complete-game shutout over George C. Marshall. Senior Finley Holmes also dominated on the mound and at the plate, posting five shutout innings against West Springfield, while going 4-for-7 with two triples, a double, six RBI and four runs.
Vero Beach has now won eight straight to improve to 11-3 on the season.
